“Universally admired as one of the most adventurous pianists to arrive on the jazz scene in years” - The Los Angeles Times
Daring and endlessly inventive, Brad Mehldau is without a doubt one of the great jazz pianists. He is both an improviser and a formalist, cherishing spontaneous expression while having a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music. Fellow musician and collaborator Pat Metheny declared him “the most exciting pianist to come along since Herbie Hancock”, and in 2006 he was honoured with a Miles Davis Award.
Jazz standards sit alongside pop classics in Mehldau’s repertoire, and he has played on a number of recordings outside of the jazz idiom, such as Willie Nelson’s Teatro. His music has featured in the soundtracks of several movies, including Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, and he was recently commissioned by Carnegie Hall to write two new works that were performed by acclaimed classical soprano Renée Fleming.
The trio’s 2008 release Brad Mehldau Trio: Live has received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group.
