"Eric is one of the new, young singers that has appeared on the scene that, much to my delight, has a great voice, is an excellent performer and has a great knowledge about the roots of this music" - Taj Mahal

The son of folk singer Leon Bibb and nephew to Modern Jazz Quartet founder John Lewis, Eric Bibb grew up surrounded – and consumed – by music. He was given his first steel guitar at age seven and told by a family friend to “keep it simple, forget all that fancy stuff”. Bibb still lists this family friend – Bob Dylan – as an influence, along with Odetta, Richie Havens and Joan Baez. While his musical roots lie in the American blues and folk tradition, elements of country, gospel and soul can also be heard. This versatility is reflected in the roll call of musicians he’s recorded with, including Taj Mahal, Charlie Musselwhite, Bonnie Raitt and Ruthie Foster. The New York native balances a fine fingerpicking technique with rich, sensitive vocals and lyrics, creating a sound that is both intimate and assured. Bibb will be performing solo at the 2009 Wellington Jazz Festival, providing the perfect opportunity to appreciate the music of this 2008 Blues Music Awards nominee for Acoustic Artist of the Year.

For a sneak preview of Eric Bibb's concert, check out the track "Pockets" from the album Get Onboard, on the Wellington Jazz Festival jukebox.
