"The night's abiding memory came courtesy of chanteuse Mélanie Pain, who shimmied with effortless French cool" - Daily Record (UK)
With her coy, breathy vocals and confessional folk-pop chansons in English and French, Mélanie Pain will seduce you as surely as she did with band Nouvelle Vague at sell-out shows during the 2008 New Zealand International Arts Festival.
French pop meets Folk and Americana in the ‘naughty but nice' singer's debut album, My Name, which incorporates personal reflections and influences including Francoise Hardy, Nick Cave, Nancy Sinatra and Leonard Cohen. Hear songs from the album performed live by Mélanie (vocals, percussion, toy keyboards, turntables) and her backup band (guitar, keyboards) with inventive playing, minimal instrumentation and the vintage sound of vinyls.
If the music doesn't take you into the faintly smoky echoes of an imagined, vintage Parisian coffeeshop, it will surely ease you, semi-intoxicated, into the night. Resistance is futile when it comes to this chanteuse.
For a sneak preview of Mélanie Pain's concert, check out the track "Peut Etre Pas" from her album My Name, on the Wellington Jazz Festival jukebox.
