"Houstoun never disappoints. His playing and stage presence are unruffled and elegant, his accuracy unerring, and the sounds he draws from the instrument show him to be the master of his craft." - The Press
Undoubtedly one of New Zealand's finest musicians, concert pianist Michael Houstoun has been a household name in this country for more than 35 years.
By the age of 18 the Timaru-born musician had won every significant prize for pianists in New Zealand and had placed in three of the world's most distinguished piano competitions. Following his international successes, he lived in London and in the United States, appearing in such venues as Queen Elizabeth Hall and Carnegie Hall. He returned to New Zealand in 1981.
Houston is a strong advocate for New Zealand music and his repertoire, which stretches from JS Bach to the present day, includes works written for him by such composers as Jack Body, John Psathas and Gareth Farr.
He won the Turnovsky Prize in 1982, received an honorary doctorate in literature from Massey University in 1999 and was made an Arts Foundation Laureate in 2007.
In 2008 his solo CD of New Zealand Music Inland was named the Best Classical Album and he was awarded a Lilburn Trust Award for his services to New Zealand music.
Nock Plays Houston Plays Nock brings together two of New Zealand's top pianists, iconic classical pianist Michael Houstoun and one of Australasia's true masters of jazz, Mike Nock.
