Nock Plays Houston Plays Nock brings together two of New Zealand's top pianists, iconic classical pianist Michael Houstoun and one of Australasia's true masters of jazz, Mike Nock.
Born in New Zealand, Nock moved to Australia in the 1950s where he soon established himself as a musician in demand. After a stint in England in the early '60s he moved to the United States, where for 25 years he worked with many of the world's top jazz musicians, including Coleman Hawkins, Yusef Lateef and Dionne Warwick. While in the States he also formed the influential electronic fusion group The Fourth Way.
Among the many awards and honours Nock has received are the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to jazz, a two-year Australian Arts Council Fellowship, three USA National Endowment Awards for composition and New Zealand Jazz Record of the Year.
As musical director of Naxos/Jazz from 1996 to 2001, Nock oversaw the production of more than 60 widely acclaimed jazz CDs.
Nock's own music has been commissioned and performed by such groups as the Cleveland Chamber Symphony (USA), Australian Chamber Orchestra, New Zealand Piano Quartet and Finland's Umo Jazz Orchestra.
