With big bands back in style, the NZ School of Music's Big Band is in more demand thane ver.
The New Zealand School of Music Big Band is comprised of senior music students and is Wellington's only regularly rehearsed big band. Featuring some of Wellington's best up and coming jazz talent, the Big Band performs a cross-section of material made famous by bands and artists such as Woody Herman, Bob Mintzer, Buddy Rich, and Bill Holman, Count Basie and Maynard Ferguson.
The Big Band's musical director Rodger Fox, is synonymous with jazz in New Zealand. As well as being the country's foremost jazz trombonist and big band leader, Fox is a jazz educator, arranger and producer. He has performed in concert with some of jazz music's leading lights and at festivals throughout the world, including the Montreux and Monterey jazz festivals.
US saxophonist Bob Sheppard will be performing with the New Zealand School of Music Big Band at the Wellington Jazz Festival, adding an exciting internation twist to the show. Based in Los Angeles, and established as one of the most highly respected improvisational artists of today, Bob has worked with everyone from jazz greats such as Peter Erskine, Chick Corea and Freddie Hubbard, to the bastions of pop music like Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello and Randy Newman.
