"Black's voice is a rare and delicate instrument... the sheer elegance of her stripped-simple melodies impossible to ignore." - NZ Herald

Award-winning jazz diva Whirimako Black is renowned for her "sublime and exceptionally expressive voice" and is a regular at festivals in NZ, Australia and Europe.

Her band for this Wellington performance features Joel Haines, a guitarist, composer and member of a Kiwi musical dynasty; Oliver Holland on bass; and drummer Ron Samsom, who has appeared on many highly regarded jazz recordings and played at major jazz festivals throughout Canada and New Zealand.

This special presentation will include songs in Te Reo Maori and English as well as a selection of Maori songs from the WWII era. With six albums to her credit, Whirimako Black is a truly unique and powerful voice for Aotearoa.

For a sneak preview of Whirimako Black's concert, check out the track "He Koha Kii Na Taku Kui" from the album Shrouded In The Mist / Hinepukohurangi, courtesy of Muscle Music, on the Wellington Jazz Festival jukebox.
